Frequently Asked Questions about Medicine Dharma Reiki
(This material was originally published at MedicineDharmaReiki.com)
Do I need to become a Buddhist to study
Men Chhos Rei-Kei®?
Yes, Dr. Usui only taught this teaching
to Mahayana Buddhists.
Do I need to take Refuge if I am a
Theravada Buddhist?
Yes, there is a formal ceremony in
Mahayana/Vajrayana in which a commitment is made to the Three refuges.
In Japanese Buddhism this is known as Jukai.
I have already taken Refuge in Mahayana/Vajrayana
Buddhism, do I need to take Refuge again?
No.
How can I take Mahayana/Vajrayana Refuge?
The Lamas and Rei Kei Sensei of Men
Chhos Rei-Kei® International, Inc., can take Refuge prior to training,
there is no charge. There are numerous Mahayana and Vajrayana
monasteries and groups throughout the world through which the Refuge
could be taken formally.
What does taking Refuge in Buddhism imply?
A vow or verbal statement of
commitments to follow the Buddha, Dharma (his teachings), and Sangha
(supporters and teachers of Buddhism).
Why is it important to become a Buddhist to
study Men Chhos Rei-Kei®?
Only Universal Reiki is available to
non Buddhists. It was and is a simple universal system of healing
without the complexities of a Buddhist spiritual practice. The
advanced or inner/esoteric teachings of Usui were only given to those
students who were Buddhist, since its content is thoroughly Buddhist
and of a confidential nature, subject to the development and
commitment of the student.
I have a Theravada Buddhist meditation
practice, will I be able to integrate with Vipassana, Samatha and
Metta etc.
Yes, the practices of Theravada
Buddhism are the very foundation of the Buddha's teachings. Therefore,
the practices of Mahayana,Vajrayana and hence Men Chhos Rei-Kei® are
supplementary.
How do the precepts differ from Theravada?
The Moral Codes Dr. Usui used are a
more complex, but at the same time carry the spirit of the Theravada
precepts. One fundamental difference is an emphasis of training in
Buddhism for the benefit of both oneself and all sentient beings. Thus
they incorporate what is called the "Bodhisattva Vow". The Moral Codes
used by Dr. Usui were condensed and simplified to what is commonly
called the "Five Reiki Principles".

Where did Reiki come from?
Dr. Usui created or formulated a system of
secular healing and simple spiritual practice which he called Rei Kei,
Westerners now call this Reiki, what we all call Reiki 1, 2, & 3
Degrees. This he formulated for anyone of any faith or no faith, yet
the origin of the system was Buddhism. The Buddhist material he
taught only to Buddhists, those who had taken Refuge in Buddhism, and
had the commitment to practise its teachings. This is now being
presented under the name Men-Chhos-Rei-Kei® or Medicine Dharma Rei
Kei®.
What is Men-Chhos-Rei-Kei® or Medicine
Dharma Rei-Kei®?
Following Dr. Usui's example, as his
written material and that of one of his major students (Dr. Watanabe)
is being translated, the esoteric teachings of Reiki are being made
available only to Buddhists and those willing to take Refuge in
Buddhism. According to Dr. Usui there were additional levels of
training, these do not relate to the 7 levels of Radiance, or any
other "invented" or channelled system of "additional Reiki". The
first level was the outer or secular teachings, which constitutes
Reiki degrees 1-3. Additionally and running parallel is the inner
teachings, which also have an advanced or "secret" phase. The first
level (Reiki 1-3) is not a prerequisite for studying the inner
teachings, although progress through Buddhist training could include
the basic teachings (Reiki 1-3).
When I do a healing, after the secret
mantra and the precepts, do I do a small sadhana to generate the deity
I need or does visualizing the deity alone | become enough. Most of
the time I use Medicine Buddha | for a general healing and then
generate the appropriate deity for specific problems.
We don't usually do a sadhanas to generate the deity on the first
level of Men Chhos Reiki (there are a couple of special rituals on the
second level when we do it), just do the visualization alone and use
Medicine Buddha or another deity as you do it now.
