This is a translation of a separate page, believed to be part of Dr. Usui’s “notes” and part of the papers found in the box containing “The Tantra of the Lightning Flash”, or Reiki .

 I have discovered that Reiki is an adjunct to healing by ordinary physicians.  At no time should the patient be treated ONLY by Reiki.  The allopathic physician has tools which have been given into his hands by the kind medical knowledge revealed from the pristine mind of Medicine King Buddha.  All medicine, allopathic, surgical, naturopathic and herbal, springs from the pristine well-spring of healing which is the mind of Medicine King Buddha.

 Therefore, the allopathic physician certainly should not be despised, neither the herbologist, nor the naturopathic physician.  All of this knowledge is a complete whole revealed from the pristine well-spring of knowledge of healing set forth so that all beings may receive healing according to their needs and according to their inclinations, and according to their mind set and the condition of their Mind Stream at the time healing is given.  The REIKI system, that of the Lightning Flash, is the direct application of the healing energy which flows from the mind of the Medicine Buddha.  However, because of the conditions of men, mankind, beings, their ignorance and obscuration brought about by the present Kali Yuga, it may also be necessary to apply other means which could prove efficacious to the patient.

 REIKI, sometimes when all other things have failed, will bring about a somewhat miraculous recovery.  At other times, it will augment and potentiate the treatment which the patient is receiving, or, due to the unfortunate karma of the patient accumulated through many lifetimes and in this present lifetime, such as killing, cruelty, and hatred, the life span of a person will be shortened.  REIKI, in such circumstances, will be of no use or service due to the past accumulations of karma.  Nevertheless, it will alleviate the suffering and symptoms, and assure that the being has a fortunate rebirth in his next incarnation.

 It is through our own stupidity and the karma which we have created, that our illnesses and obscurations arise.  Yet there is a remedy for these illnesses and obscurations brought on by our own ignorance, and that remedy is the teachings of the Buddhas and the Bodhisattvas, whose compassion flows forth like a mighty river, cleansing the three thousand-fold universe of pain, suffering, hatred, malice, jealousy, and implanting within its place true knowledge and wisdom which can serve as a beacon to those beings who are tossed about by the waves of sickness, old age, birth and death.  It can lead them to the only true healing which comes from the pristine mind of enlightenment, which this Tantra, the Lightning Flash, sets forth.

 I truly and firmly believe that, besides being a system of healing, one can gain full and total enlightenment by its practise and application.  The merits of those who use this system and apply it with right mind can be accumulated, piled high as heaps the size of Mt. Meru.  It can bring much benefit, healing, and supramundane knowledge to all of mankind.  It is the storehouse of vital information.  It is a map to enlightenment and it is a source of healing for all sentient beings.  Therefore, it should be approached with reverence and awe, yet it should be applied in all 10 directions that suffering may be alleviated, and that enlightenment may be gained.  Therefore, I will now repeat the prayer that I have gleaned from the Tantra:

 “We bow down, offer incense and pray to the Medicine Buddha King, Lord of Healing, Lord of the Lapis Lazuli light.  Throughout the 10 directions and the Three Times, may sickness be a name, a word heard no more.  May suffering be only a dark memory, may diseases be banished from the hearts and minds of all sentient beings.  May all people gain health, well-being, peace and prosperity.  Thus may the great Blessing Storehouse of all the Buddhas pour forth a rain of auspiciousness to those who hear and read these words.”
